Zi Ping Metaphysics: the Four Pillars & the Useful God
A millennium from Tang fate-calculation to the Zi Ping method: how pillars are cast, why all advice departs from the useful god, and why year pillars are server-given.
Origins: from fate-calculation to the Zi Ping method
Casting fates from birth data was already a profession in Tang China — Li Xuzhong worked with three pillars (year, month, day), and the epitaph Han Yu wrote for him is the famous witness. In the Five Dynasties–early Song, Xu Zi Ping made the decisive reform: he added the hour pillar to complete the Four Pillars, and moved the chart's center of gravity from the year to the day stem — the "day master," the chart's "I." The method has carried his name ever since. The classical canon that followed:
- Yuanhai Ziping (Song foundation text, standard in Ming editions) — the first synthesis of the method;
- Sanming Tonghui (Ming, Wan Minying) — the encyclopedic compendium;
- Di Tian Sui (attributed to Jing Tu; Qing annotations by Ren Tieqiao) — the summit of the qi-dynamics school, finest in its annotated form;
- Qiongtong Baojian (Qing editions) — the specialist book of climatic regulation: month by month, the remedy of warmth, cold, dryness and moisture for each of the ten stems;
- Ziping Zhenquan (Qing, Shen Xiaozhan) — the lucid textbook of the structural school.
In the Republican era Xu Lewu annotated the whole canon — the bridge between classical and modern practice.
Structure: how the pillars stand
| Pillar | Basis | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Sexagenary year count | Changes at Lichun, the solar term — not lunar New Year |
| Month | Stem-branch months | Changes at each of the twelve solar terms |
| Day | Continuous sexagenary day count, unbroken for millennia | New day at the zi hour |
| Hour | Twelve double-hours, stems derived from the day stem | One pillar per two hours |
One stem and one branch per pillar: eight characters. The day stem is the day master; the other seven characters, by their generative and controlling relations to it, define the ten gods — the dramatis personae of the chart: what feeds me, what I produce, what controls me, what I control, what stands beside me. Branches conceal hidden stems, the undercurrents beneath each pillar. Luck pillars derive from the month pillar — forward for yang-year men and yin-year women, reverse otherwise, one decade each. The natal chart is the hand you were dealt; luck pillars and passing years are the table on which it is played.
Charts are cast server-side with exact solar-term month boundaries; ten gods, hidden stems and nayin are computed with them — the cast chart is the source of truth, and the AI may not recompute it. Zi Wei Dou Shu is offered in parallel as a separate palace-and-star system.
The useful god: sole point of departure for advice
When the Zi Ping tradition answers "what should I do," it never starts from personality description. It starts from the useful god (yong shen) — the element that returns an unbalanced chart to balance. The two great methods of selection:
- Support and restraint: a weak day master is supported (resource and peer elements serve); an overstrong one is drained or checked (output, wealth and authority elements serve);
- Climatic regulation: a cold chart needs warmth, a parched one needs moisture — the Qiongtong Baojian is one long book about exactly this (metal born in high summer wants the forge's fire first, then fuel: only tempering makes the blade).
Advice is the useful god translated into life: pacing (deep single focus versus fluid multiplicity), the kinds of collaborators that balance you, modes of action — with directions and colors as secondary flavor only. Our readings must show the derivation chain: "because your day master is geng metal born in the si month, fire strong and metal weak, earth and metal support you… therefore —." You can see that the advice belongs to your chart alone; the visible chain is itself the proof of specificity.
The passing year: only the given value
The current year's stem-branch is computed server-side with the Lichun boundary and injected into every reading — the AI may only cite the given value and is forbidden to derive it. The reason is plain: hand-converting sexagenary years is a hallucination hot-spot for language models, and this art's credibility rests precisely on calendrical exactness.
In Ask Akasha
Pillars, ten gods, hidden stems, luck pillars and the current year are all server-computed; readings run under our Answer & Specificity Contracts — "when" questions get windows (which luck pillar, which year, which month), "which one" questions get a leaning.
Honest boundaries
The chart reads structural leanings and the texture of timing; it makes no closed prophecies. No verdicts on lifespan or marriage; wealth-related content carries a financial disclaimer. Classical terms of affliction — "control," "punishment," "tomb" — are always explained as energetic relations, never used to frighten: the terminology's sharpness belongs to analysis, and should never cut the person reading it.
