Tzolk'in: the 260-Day Sacred Count
An unbroken count of twenty-six centuries: the 20 × 13 gearing, the choice of the GMT correlation, and the living daykeeping tradition of highland Guatemala.
Origins: Mesoamerica's oldest calendar
The 260-day sacred count is the shared inheritance of the whole Mesoamerican world: the Zapotec piye, the Aztec tonalpohualli, Mixtec and Maya variants each under their own name. The earliest surviving day-sign inscriptions are Zapotec, from Oaxaca, around 600 BCE — nearly a millennium before the Maya Classic period. The lowland Maya (250–900 CE) wove it together with the 365-day Haab and the Long Count into a complete calendrical architecture: sacred and solar rounds gear into the 52-year Calendar Round, while the Long Count dated royal history. The word "Tzolk'in" itself is a modern scholars' coinage from Yucatec for "count of days" (1921); the original name is lost — a detail we also state plainly.
Structure: two gears meshing
Twenty day-signs × thirteen tones: two wheels turning together, one cycling every 20 days, the other every 13. Since 20 and 13 are coprime, no combination repeats within 260 days. Each run of thirteen days is a trecena, colored by its opening sign. Lowland and highland sign-names differ slightly (Imix/Imox); we use the highland K'iche' names that match the living tradition, noting the Yucatec forms.
Why 260? Hypotheses include the human gestation period (~266 days), Venus intervals, and pure numerology (13 deities × 20 digits) — scholarship has no verdict, and we do not pretend to one.
The correlation: our stance
Converting the Long Count to our calendar requires a correlation constant (a Julian Day offset). We use GMT 584283 (Goodman–Martínez–Thompson) — not because it is "official," but because the fieldwork of Barbara Tedlock and others shows it matches the count still kept today by highland Guatemalan daykeepers: from the Classic period to this morning, the river of days has never broken. Leap days are counted like any other; the count is continuous.
Verification anchor: 2012-12-21 = Long Count 13.0.0.0.0 = 4 Ajaw, and our conversion agrees exactly.
The Dreamspell / 13 Moon calendar popular since 1987 (created by José Argüelles) is a modern system of its own: it skips leap days, fixes its new year on July 26, and chooses its own alignment. As contemporary art it has its beauty — but it is not the Maya calendar, and passing it off as such disqualifies a source. As for the "2012 Maya doomsday": Maya sources contain no such prophecy (Tortuguero Monument 6, the only text naming the date, says nothing apocalyptic) — that was a modern projection, not a Maya voice.
A living tradition
In highland Guatemala (K'iche', Kaqchikel and neighboring peoples), daykeepers — aj q'ij — still order ritual, naming and divination by the 260-day count; the town of Momostenango is famous for a communal ritual life organized around it (the fieldwork of Tedlock's Time and the Highland Maya). The Maya calendar is not the relic of a vanished civilization but a living calendar — the most important sentence on this page.
